Frequently asked questions

Questions worth asking first

What is the legal basis for Russian residency by investment?

The framework is set out in subparagraph «в» of the Criteria approved by Russian Government Resolution No. 2573 of 31 December 2022 (text in Russian, GARANT), as amended. One route provides for investment of at least RUB 30 million in an eligible Russian legal entity.

Is RUB 30 million the total cost?

No. RUB 30 million is the statutory investment threshold for one route. Brokerage, legal, translation and other fees may apply. Terms are provided following an individual assessment.

Does buying Russian shares guarantee residency?

No. The specific issuer and transaction must qualify, the applicant must satisfy immigration rules, and the residence permit decision rests with the Russian authorities.

Can my family members obtain Russian residence permits?

Eligible family members may also qualify for Russian residence permits under applicable family provisions. Requirements and documentation depend on the family relationship and individual circumstances.

Do I need a temporary residence permit first?

No. Under the qualifying investment route, eligible foreign investors may apply directly for a Russian permanent residence permit without first obtaining a temporary residence permit.

Does the investment automatically grant Russian citizenship?

No. Qualifying investment may provide a pathway to a residence permit, not direct citizenship. Citizenship is subject to separate legal requirements.

Can I sell the shares after receiving residency?

Do not assume an immediate or unrestricted exit. Immigration consequences, liquidity, account regimes and applicable transfer restrictions should be assessed before investing or selling.

Can any foreign citizen open a Russian brokerage account?

No universal eligibility can be promised. Citizenship, residence, applicable restrictions, funding arrangements and compliance checks affect onboarding.
